Versions, references and where-used
You can open any file in your vault and see its version, its workflow state, who has it checked out and every assembly it is used in, without opening SOLIDWORKS® 3D CAD.
What the file list tells you
Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
File Name | The file |
Version | The current version in the vault |
Workflow State | In Progress, Under Review or Released |
Status | Checked in or checked out — and who has it, when it is out |
Revision | The revision once the file is Released, for example A1 or B2 |
Modified | The last change |
A file picks up a formal Revision when it reaches Released. Releases: revisions and approvals covers how it gets there.
The Info sidebar
Open the Info sidebar on any file for:
- File Properties — including file size
- Lock / Unlock status
- Check-out status
- Version Information — every version with its state; open an older one
- Where Used — every CAD document that references this file, drawings and assemblies included
Check Where Used before you change a part. It is the fastest way to see what a change is about to affect.
Actions on a file
Open the three-dot Actions menu for Rename, Submit a file for release, Download the source file and Delete. Inside a folder you also get Upload More Files and Create Sub Folders.
Locking is Workspace Owner only. A locked file cannot be edited or checked out, which is what you want on a critical document.
After you rename a file, delete the folder holding your local copy from the local cache. Next time you re-cache, Sibe pulls the file down under its new name.
Work on several files at once
Select several files and act on them together. Copy Design duplicates an assembly and resolves the references in the copy, so you start a variant without breaking the original — associated drawings come with it.
Common questions
How do I see which assemblies use a part?
Open the file and look at Where Used in the Info sidebar.
Can I check out a file without opening SolidWorks?
Yes, from the Info sidebar. Locking and unlocking is Owner only.
Who has this file?
When a file is checked out, the file list shows the name of the person who has it.
Can I see older versions of a file?
Yes. Version Information lists every version with its state, and you can open an older one.
