# Transfer workspace ownership to another account

You can hand a Sibe workspace to a different account without losing anything. Every file, version, comment and markup stays where it is. Only the Owner changes.

It takes about five minutes, and you do all of it yourself.

## Before you start

* You need to be the current **Workspace Owner**. Only an Owner can invite people, change roles and deactivate accounts.
* Have the new email address ready, and access to that inbox.
* This works the same whether you are handing the workspace to a colleague or moving your own account from a personal address to a company one.
* The workspace creator's role cannot be changed. That is why a handover works by promoting a second Owner and then deactivating the first, rather than by editing the original account. [Seats, roles and folder permissions](https://help.sibe.io/en-us/article/seats-roles-and-folder-permissions-xjwnkj/) covers how seats and roles differ.

## Transfer ownership

1. **Invite the new account.** Signed in as the current Owner, click **Invite** in the bottom-left corner. Enter the new email address, pick the **Editor** seat, and send the invitation.
2. **Register the new account.** Open the invitation email and follow the link. The account joins the workspace as a **Member**. If you are moving your own account, open the link in a private window so you stay signed in as the current Owner in the first one. [Create your Sibe account](https://help.sibe.io/en-us/article/create-your-sibe-account-1vwoz6w/) has the registration steps.
3. **Promote the new account to Owner.** In the user list, change its role from **Member** to **Owner**. It takes effect right away. The workspace now has two Owners, which is exactly what you want at this point.
4. **Sign out, then sign back in as the new Owner.**
5. **Deactivate the old account.** Go to **Settings**, open the kebab menu next to the old user, and choose **Deactivate user**.

Done. The new account owns the workspace.

> Check that the new account reads **Owner** before you run step 5. Never deactivate the last active Owner: no one would be left who can invite users, change roles or manage the subscription.

## What happens to the old account

* Versions, comments and markups stay in the workspace, still under that person's name.
* Deactivating frees their seat. Your seat count is on the Subscription page if you want to confirm it.
* Re-invite the same email address and the account comes back.

## Billing does not move on its own

Changing the Owner does not change who gets invoiced. Tell us which address the invoices should go to and we will move it, and we can keep the old address on the account as a second billing contact.

Use the **Chat** button on the Subscription page, or email [support@sibe.io](mailto:support@sibe.io). Plans and seat prices are in [Set up billing and choose your plan](https://help.sibe.io/en-us/article/set-up-billing-and-choose-your-plan-fxuai3/).

## Common questions

**Can a workspace have two Owners?**
Yes. Step 3 creates exactly that. Stop after step 4 and keep both if you want a second administrator.

**Do I have to deactivate the old account?**
No. Deactivate it when that person has actually left, or when you want the seat back.

**Does the old Owner lose their files?**
No. Files belong to the workspace, not to a person. Their versions, comments and markups stay.

**The role menu does not offer Owner.**
The invitation has not been accepted yet. A role can only be changed once the person has registered. A pending invite shows a **Resend** action in the user list.

**I only want to change the email address on my own account.**
That is a different job. Start a chat from any Sibe page, or email [support@sibe.io](mailto:support@sibe.io), and we will take a look.
